Benefits of Swimming

Now that summer is here, everyone is looking for a way to cool off. Swimming is a great way to do this! Not only is it fun, but there are a variety of benefits as well.

It’s great resistance training. Water is 12 times denser than air, so every movement requires all your muscles to work

It’s low impact. Swimming is a great aerobic exercise  that is much easier on the joints than other exercises such as running. This makes it an especially great exercise if you are overweight or suffer from arthritis.

It’s great for all ages. It doesn’t matter if you’re young or old, anyone can learn to swim. There are a variety of swim schools in the DMV area for adult and children such as Old City Swim School or Lowell School

Relieves symptoms of arthritis and fibromyalgia. The buoyancy of water supports the joints and a heated pool helps muscles and joints relax to decrease stiffness and pain. Aquatic therapy can help arthritis patients make gains in range of motion
